Invisalign Palatal Expander System

What’s the Invisalign Palatal Expander?

The Invisalign Palatal Expander is an innovative orthodontic device designed to gradually widen the upper jaw or palate (roof of the mouth).

Unlike traditional metal palatal expanders, which use a fixed appliance to expand the jaw, this offers a series of custom-made expanders that gently apply pressure to the upper teeth and palate, creating more space in the mouth. Each expander is designed to fit snugly over the teeth and incorporates subtle modifications that incrementally widen the dental arch over time.

Did You Know?

It is easier to shape the palate when the palate has not solidified; making it beneficial for children to embark on palate expansion while they are still young or has not reached puberty yet.

What It’s For

The Invisalign Palatal Expander is used to treat conditions like narrow dental arches (causing insufficient space for adult teeth), crossbites, and breathing difficulties (caused by a narrow airway). These issues often require jaw expansion to create the room required for permanent teeth.

While traditional metal expanders are effective, they are bulky and visible. Invisalign offers a discreet and flexible alternative for children and teens who may otherwise feel self-conscious.

How It Works
  1. Custom 3D Modelling: The process starts with a detailed 3D scan of the patient’s teeth, jaw, and palate. Using this scan, a series of aligners is crafted to achieve specific movements over the course of treatment.
  2. Gradual Expansion: As the aligners are worn, they exert pressure on the molars and other teeth, gently pushing them outward. This controlled force encourages the palate to expand over time.
  3. Controlled Force Application: Unlike traditional metal expanders, which require turning a screw to manually widen the jaw, Invisalign’s design allows for even pressure across the teeth and palate without the need for manual adjustments.
  4. Bone Remodelling: The controlled expansion stimulates bone remodelling in the upper jaw, allowing the dental arch to widen effectively. This process enables the bone to adjust and accommodate the expansion.

Benefits of the Invisalign Palatal Expanders
  • Comfort & Flexibility: The aligners are smooth, removable, and do not involve metal components that can cause discomfort or irritation.
  • Convenient & User-Friendly: Unlike traditional metal expanders which uses a small screw mechanism that needs to be turned regularly using a special key, most children are able to easily insert the Invisalign Palatal Expanders on their own and simply leave it be.
  • Improved Oral Hygiene: Invisalign Palatal Expanders are removable, allowing for easier brushing and flossing compared to fixed metal expanders.
  • Predictable Results: This treatment has been clinically proven to be safe and effective, allowing for predictable and highly effective outcomes.

Maintenance & Follow-Ups

Maintaining the Invisalign Palatal Expander is simple. They should be cleaned regularly using a soft toothbrush and mild soap. The patient should also swap out the expander every day (or at the frequency advised by one’s orthodontist) to the next one as he or she moves up the level of adjustment.
